I have been apprehensive to call the nurse at our pediatrician's office because last time I felt like she was so rude. Our son hadn't had a bowel movement in four days and I was unsure of how long he could go without it becoming a problem. I had wanted a little guidance on what I could do to help because he was so miserable. The Mylicon Drops to help ease his relief weren't helping. The nurse had been curt telling me that since he ate 6 oz. in the middle of the night and 4-5 every 5 hours I wasn't doing a good job with his feedings. She wanted me to routinely feed him 4 oz. every 4 hours...even in the middle of the night. At first I bought into what she was saying and felt like crap that somehow I'd missed that in all the educational books I'd read.
I LOVE working with a bunch of teachers because most have been mom's or are new mom's and have a lot of advice based on what they've been through. I feel like I learn more at lunch talking to all of them! They of course, said, " What is your philosophy with teaching?" to which I responded, "I try to teach to all the different needs of my kids. No one kid is the same." To which they replied, "Well, there you answered the question yourself; no kid is the same. You need to do what is right for your son and he will tell you in his own way what he wants and doesn't want." I'm much happier with this mentality because my son's happier! He does tell me when he's hungry and he shows me when he isn't. Obviously he's going to want 6 oz. in the middle of the night because he's just gone 7 hours without food and he's starving. He doesn't even spit it up which tells me that his belly is able to hold all that liquid. More on this topic tomorrow...
